The American Department of State released the 2022 Trafficking in Persons Report – Recommendations for the Italian authorities
In July, the U.S. State Department released its TIP – Trafficking in Persons Report 2022 on human trafficking.
According to the TIP 2022 Report the Italian government is still not fully compliant with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant progress.
The Tip 2022 report (available at the link https://www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/22-00757-TIP-REPORT_072822-inaccessible.pdf) recognizes that the Italian Government has continued its work in implementing the three-year plan to combat the exploitation of labor in agriculture by training Labor Inspectors and inform vulnerable people like foreign workers involved in agriculture.
The following recommendations have been made to Italy:
- Continue to provide and enhance the protection of foreign workers by enforcing laws and control activities;
- Ensuring that trafficking for the purpose of exploiting work is investigated and prosecuted;
- Create an inter-ministerial and multi-agency database on investigations, judicial proceedings and convictions;
- Improve safety standards within and around reception centres for migrants to reduce contact between traffickers and victim or potential victims;
- Implement appropriate legislative amendments to ensure that victims are not subject to sentences that may be inappropriately punished for illegal acts committed under the duress of traffickers.
