New International Migration Outlook report: over 6 million new migrants to OECD countries in 2022
The latest International Migration Outlook Report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sheds light on migration trends and integration into the labour market in OECD countries. In 2022, migration to these countries reached an unprecedented level, welcoming over 6 million new permanent migrants.
Interestingly, there has been a significant surge in seasonal workers and international students, with admissions reaching almost 2 million for the first time. While the employment rate of migrants improved across OECD countries between 2021 and 2022, Poland, grappling with a high influx of refugees from Ukraine, saw a notable exception.
Notably, there’s been a marked improvement in labour market outcomes for migrant women, narrowing the gender gap in several countries. These increases in labour migration and employment rates among resident migrants reflect the labour shortages experienced by many OECD nations, propelling labour migration to the forefront of political agendas. Countries like Australia and Germany are gearing up for significant changes in their labour migration frameworks, while others are ramping up their targets for labour migration.
