Employment of Migrant Citizens in Italy: 2023 Report Data

In the overall context of positive employment growth in Italy, encouraging data emerges regarding the participation of migrant citizens in the labour market. These figures come from the 2023 XIII Report on ‘Foreigners in the Italian Labour Market,’ published by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, which updates data until 2022. Employed foreigners in Italy now number 2.4 million, showing a 5.2% increase compared to the previous year, representing 10.3% of the total employed population. The employment rate for this category stands at 60.6%, slightly higher than the 60.1% of Italians.

Another noteworthy data point underscores the positive trend: a 12.4% increase in the activation of contracts with foreign citizens, surpassing the 10.5% activation rate for Italian citizens. However, the Report highlights some persistent challenges. In particular, there is a significant gender disparity among migrant workers, with migrant women recording notably worse employment rates (47.5%), unemployment rates (15.2%), and inactivity rates (43.8%) compared to men.

An addition in this edition is a chapter dedicated to the integration of foreign workers, focusing on various aspects such as the time required for integration, perceived discrimination, alignment between job roles, education levels, skills, and proficiency in the Italian language.
